Why should I feed my dog raw?

Dogs have been eating raw diets for thousands of years. In fact, every wild animal in the world is eating a raw diet right now. It’s only in the last 150 years that dog owners started feeding processed convenience foods to their pets. Since then, the domestic dog has seen a steady decline in both health and life expectancy.

Today, dogs share the same “disease of civilisation” that humans face. Processed food and poor-quality diet are major contributors to the man-made diseases (obesity, cancer, diabetes, allergies, digestive disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, etc.) that your dog may face.

What’s in a raw diet?

While raw diets can vary, they’re always meat-based and generally contain the following ingredients:

  1. Muscle meat
  2. Edible bone
  3. Organs
  4. Plants
  5. Supplements

Is it safe to feed my dog raw meat?

Yes. Dogs have very different digestive tracts with a highly acidic gastric PH (2 or lower). This acidic environment is highly suitable for the breakdown of meat, raw bones and is effective at killing pathogenic bacteria.

What are the benefits of feeding a raw food diet?

There is considerable evidence to show that a natural, raw food diet results in numerous benefits including a glossy coat, healthy skin, lean muscle tone, robust immune system, sweet smelling breath, healthy teeth and gums, increased energy, better digestion and a strong heart. A specially formulated raw food diet is especially beneficial for working dogs as it helps performance and healing. Its advantages cannot be overstated, dogs eating a raw food diet can be expected to live longer and to suffer less illness and disease.

How much should I feed my dog?

It is recommended to feed between 2-3% of your dog’s ideal, adult body weight, per day (divided into two meals). We provide a feeding guide that can help you calculate how much to feed your dog.

Can raw food help with weight loss?

Raw food is the easiest, healthiest way to help your dog return to his or her correct weight without feeling hungry.

What about the bacteria on raw meat?

Dogs have the most amazing immune system. Consider what they sniff, lick and eat during the course of a typical walk in a park! The bacteria found on fresh meat poses no threats to them whatsoever. Further, our meat products are prepared and snap frozen within 4 hours of being collected from human-grade suppliers.

How do I transition my dog onto your meals?

We highly recommend gradually transitioning your dog onto a raw diet using either a fast 7-day or standard 14-day transition, depending on the circumstances. Your first order will contain step-by-step instructions on transitioning your dog to our meals. This will give your dog time to adjust and adapt to their new species appropriate diet and involves mixing your previous food with The Naked Dog meals and gradually increasing the amount of raw.

When transitioning to our meals we strongly recommend starting with one of the Chicken variants as this is gentle on sensitive tummies. It is not recommended to transition your dog to a raw diet with high fat products including Beef, Lamb, Pork and Duck. These can be introduced gradually once your dog has adjusted to their raw diet.

I’ve noticed peculiar poop when transitioning

During transition, it’s normal to see slight changes in their stool (loose) – don’t panic! This is perfectly normal. Dogs digest kibble and canned food differently than raw meat which result from digesting fillers, carbohydrates and starches found in commercial diets.

Feeding meals that are rich sources of fat may result in loose stool or stomach sensitivities if fed too much. We recommend feeding raw Beef, Lamb, Pork and Duck moderately if sensitives are identified.
